Midterm Test for Syntax
1. Explain the correlation of the idea that language is used as a correlation between gestures and meaning?
A: Gestures…….. Meaning
Gestures to understand the idea that language is a correlation between gestures and meaning, we need to understand gestures, There are two minds of gestures. Oral and Manual both are used to express meaning. If we want to tell someone we think something is good we can use a manual gestures we can put our thumb up or we can use an oral gestures “ That is good both gestures convey , the same meaning .”
B: Gestures……. Arrangement ……..Meaning
Arrangement refers to how we organize oral gestures in a different way but still convey the same meaning .
…Different language arrange word or oral gesture in a different way but still convey the same meaning .
…..The boy is sitting on the chair demonstrate . He arrangement in English language
….The arrangement is subject verb object
In Indonesia , Toba Tabak language is used with the arrangement of the subject and object after the verb.
The boy “ sit on the chair boy ” the arrangement or syntax is different but the meaning is the same and so are the oral gestures used to convey the meaning .

2. To under stand Syntax perfectly well, we need to under the other linguistic branch ‘Morphology.’ Why is that? Can you try to analyze using the following data.
Morphology is important. If syntax is concerned with word orgesture with word structure which including, for example refix and suffix
The word structure is important to be accurate and shows things. For example 1st person 2ed person and so on .
a. *Barking dogs does not bite
The structure of does is wrong should be do
b. *All men is create equal
Should be “ All men are create equal . The subject and verb should agree –ed is added to create –to show passive voice
c. *How long id your feet ? one foot
Should be “ How long are your feet ” we can see the –ee means plural and –oo- means singular . This is morphology not syntax , Morphology also gives us meaning .

3. Experience of Language_ _ _ _language faculty_ _ _ _Grammar of L
--Competence /performance
Two words look at the difference of speaker/hearers competence their knowledge of the language and speaker/hearers performance their actual use of language .
--species – specific
This is a field of linguistics concerned with looking at the nature of human language by looking at what is and is not possible as a human language . It is a theory that explain human language and human language . as species __ specific capabilities of human –being , a human gift .
-- Linguistic Acquisition Device --LAD
This as an “ organ ” of the brain that human ate born with and is a device for language acquisition , some believe it is unavailable after a certain age .
-- Principles and Parameter Theory --PPT
The idea says that a person syntactic knowledge can be modelelled with two mechanisms.
Clear principles common to all languages for example a sentence need a subject clear parameters
that lead to syntactic variatility amongst language .
Whether the subject needs to be pronounced principles and parameters are proposed as part of a genetically innate universal grammar .

4. Compare Thai and English in terms of the followings
a. Case
The case of English and Thai are not different but English had tense, for example

c. sentence / phrase structure
Sentence and Phrase structure are different structure, sentence made from words , but phrase made from sentence, phrases are combined together to form clauses, and clauses are combined together to for complex sentence
5. Employ any means to show clearly the concept of “Constituent’ and ‘Construction’ of the following sentence.
John normally smokes cigarettes in the morning
The function of the constituents contained in the pare of the clause , following the comma is straight forward to analyse : “ John is the subject, smokes is the predicate , in the morning is adjuncts, cigars which is the complement cigars are the two arguments of the predicate smokes. A clause is an expression which contains a subject and a predicate. The clause tells us something about agars, the part of the clause following the comma is said to be the comment.
